The Thin Value Bet
You reach the river, you have an average hand (second bottom pair, middle pair etc) and you are not sure whether to put in a small bet or to just check and showdown. It’s not an easy decision; you could come up against an unwanted re-raise or on the other hand, you could be missing an opportunity to extract that little bit more cash from your opponent. This is where the thin value bet comes into play.

A thin value bet is a value bet, usually on the river, where your hand is weaker than your normal value range but you believe that your opponent’s hand is weaker and you think you can get a pay-off from them. If you think that sounds tricky, you’d be right. You need the skill to know that you are ahead, plus you need to know that your opponent thinks he is right to call your bet. It is the ultimate set-up.

For those of you that normally focus on Scratch Cards , let’s look at some specific spots where the thin value bet can work. When a scare card hits on the river, you can use it to your advantage if it has been checked to you. When a flush draw misses, it gives you the chance to put in a great thin value bet on the river, because it looks like you’ve missed your flush and your opponent’s calling range massively increases (he thinks you have missed your flush). If you have been bluffing at the table, your image will make your opponents open up their calling range against you. If an opponent thinks you are a bluffer, he will call more value bets on the river, thinking you are bluffing, simple as that.

This sort of betting is difficult so the easy answer to someone saying they do not have enough skill or information to pull it off is simple; don’t even try. If you get this type of play wrong, not only will you lose chips but you’ll look like an idiot, paying people off on the river with mid-range hands.
